Christian Farina is a PhD student at the University of Verona and a member of IoT4Care. He received his BSc in Computer Science in 2023 and his MSc in Computer Engineering for Robotics and Smart Industry in 2025 at the University of Verona. His master’s thesis, supervised by Graziano Pravadelli, investigated multi-person breathing-rate estimation using mmWave radar, establishing the contactless sensing direction that he is continuing in his doctoral work.

His research studies how radio-frequency sensing can recover physiological and behavioural information without requiring people to wear dedicated devices. In particular, he works with millimetre-wave radar to separate and estimate the vital signs of multiple people sharing the same environment, a problem that combines signal processing, sensing geometry and learning-based interpretation while imposing real-time and robustness constraints.

This work complements IoT4Care’s longer research line on wearable and wireless monitoring, which includes Bluetooth Low Energy, WiFi sensing and human activity recognition. Christian’s contribution pushes that line toward contactless healthcare sensing, with the aim of making continuous monitoring less intrusive while retaining the reliability needed for practical deployment in living and care environments.
