Cyber-Physical and IoT Systems Design · University of Verona

Objective

Smart-Pump investigated an intelligent assistive system for people with Parkinson’s disease receiving continuous drug administration. The project aimed to combine observation of motor symptoms with decision support so that therapy could be adjusted more closely to the patient’s actual motor response rather than relying only on occasional clinical assessments.

This was particularly relevant for people experiencing motor fluctuations and for situations in which frequent specialist visits were difficult. The project also aimed to give clinicians a more detailed longitudinal picture of motor response, helping them assess treatment effectiveness and the evolution of the disease.

Monitoring and decision support

The technical problem joined two layers: continuous or repeated observation of motor behaviour, and an assistive layer able to turn those observations into information useful for therapy regulation. The project therefore sits at the intersection of wearable/IoT monitoring, analysis of movement data and clinical decision support.

The public University of Verona administrative record describes the intended outcome as an intelligent system for monitoring and controlling motor problems in Parkinson’s disease. Related research from the Verona team subsequently reports wearable body-area sensing and activity-recognition methods supported in part by the Smart-Pump grant; this provides public evidence of the sensing and analysis research developed around the project without implying that every later publication is exclusively a Smart-Pump result.

Administrative record

The University of Verona record identifies Graziano Pravadelli as scientific lead, project code 1695-0013-1463-2019 and CUP B35J19001620002. Regione del Veneto lists the same project among the admitted POR FSE initiatives.

The former CISD site recorded Florenc Demrozi as project referent and classified Smart-Pump under Internet of Things 4 Care. A public activity record gives the period as July 2020 to July 2021; the day-level start and end values in this site simply represent those stated months in the project’s date schema.
