Francesco Tosoni is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Verona and collaborates with ESD. He completed his PhD in Computer Science in 2026 with research on faulty-behaviour simulation in industrial cyber-physical systems for safety analysis. His work asks how faults that originate in different physical domains can be represented, injected and propagated through a system in a form suitable for repeatable engineering analysis.
A central theme is multi-domain fault modelling. Mechanical degradation, electrical defects, thermal effects and software-visible failures are often studied with separate tools, even though in a cyber-physical system they influence one another. Francesco has worked on methods that couple these domains, including Verilog-AMS and SystemC-AMS models, abstraction techniques and concurrent simulation of electrical and mechanical faults. This makes it possible to study not only whether a component fails, but how a physical fault changes the observable behaviour of the complete system.
His research also connects these models with digital twins and functional safety. Thermal digital twins, fault injection and simulation can generate controlled faulty scenarios that would be expensive, destructive or unsafe to reproduce on physical machinery. The resulting data and models support safety analysis, diagnosis and validation of industrial cyber-physical systems before faults occur in operation.
