Nicola Dall’Ora is a temporary Assistant Professor at Guglielmo Marconi University and collaborates with ESD. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Verona in 2023 with the thesis “Fault-based Analysis of Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems”, supervised by Franco Fummi. He also continues to collaborate with the Department of Engineering for Innovation Medicine at Verona as a research consultant.
His research takes a holistic view of faults in cyber-physical systems. Instead of analysing the electrical, mechanical, thermal or communication domains independently, he studies how faults originating in one physical domain propagate through the rest of the system and eventually alter software-visible behaviour. This includes multi-domain modelling, simulation and abstraction, analog and mixed-signal defect injection, and the extraction of fault modes that can be used to assess functional safety.
A practical objective of this work is to support resilient industrial systems that can recognise dangerous conditions before they become failures for machinery or people. His research therefore connects fault injection with digital twins, runtime monitoring, synthetic-data generation and validation methods for smart manufacturing. He has also contributed to transistor-level manipulation and defect-injection techniques, extending the same safety-oriented reasoning from circuit descriptions up to complete cyber-physical systems.
